Vitamins and Minerals in Portugal: Vitamin D, Magnesium, Zinc and Multivitamins

Micronutrients for everyday life. Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients the body needs in small amounts, and they should come first and foremost from a varied diet. In this collection you will find vitamin and mineral supplements from brands such as NOW Foods, Osavi, OstroVit, Life Extension, Swanson and Optimum Nutrition, as capsules, tablets, lozenges, powders and sprays. Food supplements are not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle.

Most popular vitamins. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and to the normal function of the immune system. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism. Explore vitamin D3 and the B complex.

Essential minerals. Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Zinc contributes to the normal function of the immune system and to the maintenance of normal hair, nails and skin. Iron contributes to normal oxygen transport in the body and selenium to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. See the magnesium and minerals collections. These claims apply to products providing at least 15% of the nutrient reference value (NRV) per daily dose.

Multivitamin or single supplement? A multivitamin brings several vitamins and minerals together in one daily serving — a practical option. A single-nutrient supplement lets you choose exactly the nutrient and the amount. Either way, compare the amount per serving with the %NRV shown on the label.

Dosage and safety. Some products provide amounts far above the NRV (for example vitamin D3 5000 IU or zinc 50 mg), above the tolerable upper intake levels set by EFSA for adults. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose, add up the same nutrient when you take several supplements and consult your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medication.

Frequently asked questions

What does %NRV mean? It is the percentage of the nutrient reference value — the daily reference amount for adults set in the EU — that one serving of the supplement provides.
